A new development by the Tourist Board of Miskolc for the fall season which redefines the usage of touristic card. The now debuting Miskolc Pass card for kids is also a fridge magnet which can be displayed on a fridge after its expiration. In addition by scanning the QR code on the magnet the family can get information about the actual events in Miskolc.

The Miskolc Pass for kids provides free entrance to the Cave Bath Miskolctapolca**** and other baths of Miskolc, Castle of Diósgyőr, Miskolc Zoo and to the museums of the city, furthermore lots of discounted services are included. The specialty of the card is that it’s based on Smart QR code, so while the card is valid the owner can get a useful interactive map of Miskolc by scanning the QR code, after its expiration the can get information about the current events in Miskolc. For those who are under 6, the public transport is free, so it is possible to buy a card without the public transport discount.

The Smart QR code based Qard card system is developed by Hungarian professionals and its advantage is that the card can be purchased and activated online at www.miskolcpass.com. In this case the buyer will get the card in PDF format which they can show on their phone so it is not necessary to print. This means that the Miskolc Pass tourist card is currently the most environmentally-friendly “green” card in the world.

The picture on the card is the Castle of Diósgyőr. The Tourist Board of Miskolc selected the graphic work of Roland Bánrévi by asking different age of kids. The picture is charming and modern at the same time, and a little bit mystical for the kids, so it reflects perfectly why Miskolc is attractive for the kids.

In the summer time, people mainly come to Miskolc to take a dip, but the fall is perfect for a short family trip, or hiking in the Bükk. This is the season when the families prefer the adventurous places like the Castle of Diósgyőr, Miskolc Zoo, and the caves of Lillafüred. All of these can be visited for free with the Miskolc Pass card so the family can save thousands of Hungarian Forint on a weekend.

Summer in Hungary is something special. I’ll never forget my first June visit in 2006: Never ending fields of sunflowers under big blue skies. Roadside stalls full of watermelons. Spending days lakeside with a cooler full of beer. Warm evenings sipping fröccs on Széchenyi Utca. And of course the garden parties, cooking gulyás in a bogrács (cauldron) above an open flame. Everyplace has its own distinct summer vibe, Miskolc and its environs are no different.

Here are 5 things not to miss if you’re in Miskolc this June:

Bartók Plus Opera Festival-- June 10th-19th

Attracting performers from across the globe, Miskolc’s annual opera festival has become one of the summer’s biggest attractions. Created by Péter Müller Sziámi, former art director at the Miskolc National Theatre, the event seeks to promote and preserve Béla Bartók’s legacy. Aside from opera, attendees can expect orchestra performances, choirs, ballet, lecturers and other musical acts.

Local Producer’s Day-- June 19th

Want to get a taste of what Miskolc has to offer? Check out this fun filled market for handcrafts, jewelry, clothing, local produce, cheese, sausage, jams and more. While Miskolc is decidedly urban, there is a wealth of agricultural and pastoral happenings in its suburbs and neighboring villages. Hungarian traditions are alive and well in these parts, and they’re as tasty as they are beautiful.

Bükkszentkereszti Kemencés Days-- June 11th-12th

A kemencé is a Hungarian brick oven used for cooking all sorts of tasty treats. Like their cauldron cooking, Hungarians don’t mess around when it comes to whipping up hearty dishes in their kemencé. Think pizza, roasted meat, crispy pastries and clay pots full of sizzling goodness. This two day bonanza features live music, games and a lot of food. Sunday the 12th will be full of children’s activities and free horse riding. While Bükkszentkereszt isn’t part of Miskolc, it’s well worth the 20 minute drive through the Bükk hills to this picturesque village. Besides the festival, you’ll find plenty of hiking trails and expansive forest views.

Fröccs Festival –- June 24th-25th

The quintessential summer drink, fröccs (wine spritzer, pronounced fruutch) is a Hungarian institution. Typically dry white wine or rosé is mixed with soda water. Hungarian inventor Ányos Jedlik devised the world’s first method for creating soda water on an industrial scale. And as the story goes, he mixed the first fröccs in 1842. The beauty of a wine spritzer is that you have full control over the alcohol/soda ratio. In fact, there is a whole fröccs ordering system, including: kisfröccs (little fröccs– 1 dl wine, 1 dl soda), nagyfröccs (big fröccs – 2 dl wine, 1 dl soda) and the Avasi fröccs (named after Miskolc’s Avas wine cellars – 7 dl wine, 3 dl soda). Miskolc holds its very own ode to fröccs with this annual festival. Choose from endless varieties of mixtures while exploring the Avas wine cellars overlooking downtown.

St. Ivan Midsummer Night at the Diósgyőr Castle – June 25th

Essentially a celebration marking the Summer Solstice, St. Ivan’s Night (Szentiván-éj) is a pagan/catholic tradition celebrated on June 21st. On the 24th Hungarians venerate St. John the Baptist, and traditionally jump over fires on this night as a sort of ritual purification. The event is meant to chase away darkness and evil as days become long and the nights short. The Diósgyőr Castle puts on an evening full of fantasy and wonder that’s fun for the whole family.

Since my first visit to Miskolc over ten years ago, Erzsébet Square has since symbolized the city’s downtown. The heroic statue of Hungarian patriot Lajos Kossuth, the Szarvas Pharmacy’s eclectic architecture, the Szinva Creek flowing past and the gothic Protestant Church and TV tower on Avas hill above. These elements combine to paint Miskolc’s most recognizable scene. It’s the Erzsébet Bath’s turquoise glass dome and grand exterior, however, which give life and color to the picture.

The Erzsébet Bath, designed by Karoly Adler, was built between 1892 and 1893. It was to be a public bathhouse right in the city center. By 1910 the structure was renovated to emulate the Karlsbad Marien Bath in the Czech Republic. Sadly, the bath fell into disrepair in the 1990’s and never recovered as a functioning bathhouse.

Today this beloved space, emblematic of Miskolc, has transformed into the Erzsébet Fürdő Healing Center. Along with traditional western medical treatments, a broad range of alternative healing therapies are available. These include: massage, acupuncture, detoxification, natural cosmetics and hydro colon therapy among others.

This past month has been unusually stressful for my wife Anita and me. I won’t bore you with the details—let’s just say a massage was long overdue. On a bright, breezy April day we walked through Erzsebet Square, past a kaleidoscope of beautiful flowers, and into the healing center. Right away one notices the interior’s modernity and welcoming vibes. After checking in, Anita headed upstairs for her massage. I explored their sizable health shop, Mandala Bio Bolt, full of homeopathic remedies and supplements.

After a half an hour it was my turn. I had opted for a simple back massage when we made the appointment a couple of days earlier. Face down on the massage table, I exhaled deeply and prepared for some much needed relaxation.

The masseuse was friendly and cheerful as she asked a few questions before beginning my massage. I often have built up tension in my upper back from rock climbing and too much time at the computer. Because of this I prefer strong massages. She began very gently and I wondered if this would be one of those massages that annoyingly ends before you experience some stress release. Within minutes, however, she found the knots in my back. From then on she worked diligently on my upper back area.

When my half hour was up, I felt relaxed and the soreness in my back had dissipated. The small woman offered me a cup of tea and smiled. “Koszonom szepen” (Thank you very much) I said, truly grateful that a month’s worth of stress had come to an end.

The Lillafüred Trout Farm abounds in delicious fishes like Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Brook Trout. Because of Bükk Mountain and the forests tasty venison and mushroom flavored foods are the favorite meals of the local people. The gastronomic culture of Miskolc assimilated the neighbor Slavic gastronomy style such as Slovakian, Rusyn and Polish cuisine in the 18th century.

We can offer several possibilities and incredible places to eat a special Hungarian, delicious meal in our interesting city. Our exclusive tips to know the cuisine of Miskolc:

1. Végállomás Bistorant - Crispy trout of Lillafüred with fried vegetables and Remoulade-sauce

The Lillafüred Trout Farm is waiting for the fish-lovers since 1930. This is the only place in Hungary, where native brown trout can be found in such quantities. You can try the classic Lillafüred trout with grilled vegetables in the Végállomás Bistorant near the Forest Railway Station in Miskolc. The French-style Remoulade-sauce completes the gastro experience. The restaurant took the 66th place in the Dining Guide, which is a guide of the best Hungarian restaurants. This means that the Végállomás Bistorant is one of the best Hungarian restaurants.

2. Drót Bistro & Restaurant – Rooster stew with noodles, home-made pickles

The Drót Bistro & Restaurant opened in 2013 to represent a modern style of gastronomy in Miskolc, under the City Hotel. They offer Hungarian folk-style, vegetarian and international dishes. If you want to have a nice wine dinner the restaurant has a unique selection of wines to offer. We recommend you the venison stew with „strapachka” which is a Slovakian-style dish, made of grated potatoes.

3. Miskolc Shop – Diósgyőr's Sausage

The Diósgyőr's Sausage, which is made by a seven hundred years old, unusual medieval recipe. Spices and herbs, such as thyme, summer savory, garlic, marjoram are used for seasoning the sausage. These are the same spices which Pauline Fathers used in 1300. It doesn't contain artificial flavoring substances, preservatives and red pepper powder, because the Hungarians did not use pepper in their cuisine before the 18th century. It can be consumed by dyspeptic guests.

4. Creppy Pancakehouse and Restaurant – Svejk's Favorite Crepe

„Think different about pancakes and crepes” – This is how the Creppy Pancakehouse advertises itself. Their meals are made by special recipes, in which every dish has to do with crepe. The restaurant is a gastronomic heaven for the sweet-toothy guests, and for those who likes salty food because they make salty crepes also like the – Hortobágyi palacsinta - which is a special Hungarian savory pancakes filled with meat. We believed that the Svejk's Favorite Crepe is the perfect choice if you visit here. This is a pancake filled with red wine braised beef stew, with sour cream, bacon and vegetables.

Are you planning a family weekend? Here are 6 programs in Miskolc and its surroundings for this spring. We loved them! Neither your children nor you won’t be bored for days.

1. Miskolctapolca – from cave bathing to go-kart

Miskolctapolca is a must-see place, if you spend some days in Miskolc. The Cave Bath is the most famous attraction of Miskolctapolca and it is one of the most special baths in Europe, where you can take a dip in natural caves! In addition, you can take part of unforgettable adventures in the Adventure Park and try the Bobsled track.

Since the last spring, you can visit the Avalon Park, where Mayan Game Park is waiting for the kids and the adults can try out the go-kart track or relax in the Beer-garden. To reach from a place to another, you can use Dotto train. The renewed and expanded Lido of Miskolctapolca opened to the public on the last summer, where you should try the inner pools and the wellness services before the summer season.

Tip: If you visit Miskolc, bring a postcard from your hometown to the Tourinform office filled with your experiences in Miskolc, and we give a free Miskolc postcard!

Photo: #hellomiskolc

2. Museum tour with the family in the downtown of Miskolc

A program, which is attractive, even if it’s raining. The exhibitions of the Herman Ottó Museum is definitely a nice program for the whole family. Different eras are displayed in interactive ways in different departments of the museum – so the kids can enjoy the exhibitions, as much as the adults. Our favorite one is the Pannon Sea Museum, where my son wants to take everyone, who visits us. Different kind of exercises are waiting for the kids from coloring to computer tests. In addition, they can start the explosion of the volcano of Tokaj Mountain. Meanwhile, adults can have a look at the mineral collection and explore the wildlife of the Pannon Lake.

If you visit the Pannon Sea Museum, don’t miss the Picture Collection in the same building, where you can see famous Hungarian paintings for example “The old fisher” from Csontváry. The museum tour doesn’t end without discovering the other building on Papszer Street. You can see there three different exhibitions: the “Elite company”, which is about the Hungarian conquest, the “Other/World” is about the mysteries of the bronze age in Northeast Hungary and the third one is about the age of Bertalan Szemere, a Hungarian politician in the 19th century.

And if you are here on the Papszer Street, you should walk to Miskolc Gallery, where you can see paintings from the first half of the 20th century painted by the most outstanding painters of Hungary.
The Museum of Theater History and Performing Arts is an unmissable place, where kids and adults also enjoy the dressing up, and the acting on stage, or even try the color organ.

TIP: With Miskolc Pass Tourist Card you can enter each museum once for free, moreover you can also use the public transport free while the card is valid. For more details visit miskolcpass.com, where you can purchase the cards online.

Photo: #hellomiskolc

3. Adventures along the Forest Train

Travelling on the Forest Train is always a huge experience for everyone, but it also provides more than travelling: it is a connection between the family programs of Diósgyőr and Garadna. If you get off at Lillafüred, you should visit the Sport and Adventure Park of Lillafüred, where children can try the thematic playground. In addition, paintball and a special adventure park is also waiting for the visitors. The Chairlift of Lillafüred will open in May, but you can also go for a Segway or golf car tour.

On Lake Hámor, the boats are ready for paddling and for the lovers of hiking we can suggest to explore the Molnár Rock and the Szeleta Cave. If the kids are tired, they can relax in the Eco Touristic Center next to the Lillafüred train station, where they can use the train simulator. In the Hanging Gardens, there is also a playground for kids.

However, Lillafüred is not the last stop of the trip: if you continue your route, you can have a look at the Ancient Furnace or the Lillafüred Trout Farm and Restaurant is a great program for families. If you are going to the city center from Lillafüred, you should get off the train at Diósgyőr, which is one stop before the terminus, and visit the Castle of Diósgyőr.

TIP: You can get free maps and brochures about Miskolc and Lillafüred, and buy some souvenirs in the Eco Touristic Center.

Photo: #hellomiskolc

4. Experience the Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park

Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park is a must-see place for families. The 33 years old zoo has more than 130 species. My son’s favorite is the ring-tailed lemur, but most people visit there because this is the only zoo in Hungary, where they can see the porcupine. In the zoo, there are family programs and exciting feeding shows, where visitors can witness how zookeepers feed the animals.

TIP: The trip with our Guide@Hand Miskolc app from Csanyik to Lillafüred starts from the ‘Majális Park’, which guides us to the Molnár Rock among others. You should download the app, which is available for iOS and android.

Photo: Tamás Veress / Miskolc Zoo

5. Village of teddy bears and the salt cellar in Harsány

Harsány is the village, whereyou can find something new every year. It is known for its adventure park and fishing lake, but this year, the visitors can see the biggest teddy bear collection in Hungary. The saltcellar is covered with salt from Parajd, which is a good cure for the asthma. If you are in Harsány, you should visit Kisgyőr in the neighborhood, where the biggest Bethlehem of Central Europe is open all year round. You can also hike on the “Parlagi sas(Eastern imperial eagle)” nature trail in Kisgyőr, which is more than 7 kilometers long. The Bükk Mountain is very beautiful in spring. It is worth to leave the noisy city to spend some days here with the whole family.

TIP: In the saltcellar, there is a Székely Products Shop.

Photo: #hellomiskolc

6. Szentlélek – Ruins of the Pauline Fathers Monastery, hiking and adventure park

Clear air, nice environment, fantastic, active family programs - this is the description of Szentlélek, which is located 14 kilometers from Lillafüred at a 710m elevation. It is a very popular place not just because of the Ruins of the Pauline Fathers Monastery, but this is a point of departure to a lot of hiking paths in the Bükk. You can also rent bikes and go for a ride in the forest. If you need even more active programs, you can try climbing wall and the adventure park.

TIP: If you do not want to stay at the Tourist Park, we suggest the Sebesvíz Pension with hot tub, fishpond and family rooms. It is also in the Bükk Mountains and 15 minutes far from Szentlélek by car.

Local Flavors, Local Style

Anita and I had decided a Wednesday dinner date would be a nice break from weekday monotony. Dűlő seemed an optimal choice: modern, romantic and well-reviewed. We were seated in an intimate room with soft lighting and simple design. The interior of this old wine merchant’s home has been meticulously renovated. With white walls, high ceilings and pine wood accents, there is a sense of space and freshness here. Soft, jazzy covers of timeless songs created a relaxed mood. Anita and I smiled at each other as we looked up from our menus. So far so good.

Our neatly dressed waiter returned, and we ordered some wine from St. Andrea in the nearby Eger wine region. Last summer we visited St. Andrea. Their wines are incredible. Two other couples were now seated in the room. Through an archway I watched as well-heeled people headed downstairs to Dűlő’s wine bar. A long table was set in the next room for a large group—not a bad turnout for a Wednesday, I thought.

The wine was served promptly. Tasting St. Andrea’s Csakegyszóval pinot noir conjured up memories of that summer day in Egerszalók with Anita and my brother Paul, who was visiting from California. Ordering was a breeze, as Dűlő’s menu is in Hungarian and English. I ordered the pink duck breast with toasted croquettes, red cabbage and plum sauce. Anita chose the beef cheeks with bread dumplings, crispy onion and Brussel sprouts.

I had wanted to visit Dűlő for some time. One of my co-workers recommended it a few months back. While Miskolc is no stranger to fine dining, there definitely aren’t too many options when it comes to non-traditional Hungarian cuisine. Finding a restaurant that serves local, modern and innovative dishes is a challenge.

Only Here

Miskolc is a fairly large industrial city, yet all around Borsod County one finds agricultural and pastoral happenings. Quality produce, meat and dairy is abundant. Vineyards are everywhere and artisanal foodstuffs common. The Bükk and Zemplén mountains give contour and wild game. The Tisza and Bodrog rivers give life and fish. Dűlő knows this well, their menu is packed with ever-changing, locally sourced ingredients.

In many ways, this restaurant manages to distill Miskolc and its environs down into a single place. Concrete and steel symbolize industry, while the use of copious wood and indoor plants represent the Bükk National Park. Their menu is based on the concept of terroir: ingredients from this place, in season. I’m told the style here is inspired by the patchwork architecture of the Avas Hill wine houses behind the restaurant. A place where factory workers used scraps of this and that to create their visions. Resourceful people who used what they had, where they were.

While waiting for our food, a small plate of fresh bread and parsley infused cream cheese was served. Simple, yet vibrant, fresh and beautiful. The parsley’s aroma filled the room. It was also very tasty: herby, creamy and satisfying . . . not to mention free.

Main Course

Using the Miskolc Pass Card we received a complimentary glass of house wine each. Their 2012 Szent Benedek Fruska (a blend of Furmint and Muscat) was a surprisingly complex wine. Calling this a "house wine" really doesn't do it justice.

Our dishes arrived soon after. The duck breast had been sliced and nicely arranged amongst croquets. Plum sauce zig-zagged across the plate. My dish lacked a bit of color and wasn’t quite warm enough, though. Nevertheless, the duck was incredibly tender, and together with the plum sauce, a deliciously savory, sweet and satisfying combination. Anita’s plate looked appetizing. Neither of us had eaten beef cheeks before and Anita was a tad apprehensive. Served atop toasted bread dumplings and garnished with crispy onions, the cheeks looked much like small steaks.

Flaky and delicate, the beef cheeks were delicious. Flavorwise I could tell the meat was fresh and of high quality. Beef isn’t too common in Hungary and is often overcooked. Here it was perfect.

Dessert

This was by far the best part of our meal—and the meal was good. Anita ordered passion fruit cheesecake and I got the “OLVADÓS” chocolate brownie with orange jam.

Intense, warm and oozing, this little brownie is the stuff of chocoholic dreams. It was literally fresh from the oven. The orange jam a perfect pairing—rich chocolate meeting citrusy zest. Anita’s cheesecake was also a knockout: creamy, sweet but not too sweet, with an exotic fruitiness. “I don’t know how they made this,” Anita remarked, “but this is better than pretty much any cheesecake I had in the U.S.” I took a bite, and it was indeed one of the best I’ve had anywhere.

Looking back on it, dinner at Dűlő was almost a perfect dining experience: The ambiance is welcoming and fresh; staff are friendly yet reserved; orders are taken and served promptly; the wine list is great and the food fresh.

It’s a place I would return to. It’s a place on par with restaurants I’ve eaten in around the world. Sure, it’s a bit pricier than other restaurants in Miskolc, but you get what you pay for. And this is certainly true at Dűlő.

Miskolc’s west end is the gateway to Hungary’s Bükk National Park. It’s here you’ll find some of the city’s most beautiful sights and exciting activities. Heading towards the hills, Miskolc becomes less urban and the picturesque village of Hámor leads to glorious Lillafüred. There is a small town feel on this side of Miskolc: a place to slow down, enjoy the forest, explore unique museums and eat locally inspired dishes.

Here are 4 perfect itineraries for a memorable day on Miskolc’s west side.

Cake, a castle and Miskolc’s best restaurant

Start at the Kisgergely Cukrászda and choose from a tantalizing selection of cakes and pastries. Or try a scoop of their luscious ice cream. From here, head down the pleasant Gesztenyefasor (Chestnut Tree Alley) towards the Castle of Diósgyőr.

The castle was originally built in the 12th century but was destroyed during a Mongol invasion soon after. It was then rebuilt in Gothic style in the 1300’s. The castle changed hands many times over the next few centuries and was typically used as a base for hunting excursions. Diósgyőr Castle also became a traditional wedding gift for Hungarian queens.

Former residents include: King Bela IV, King Lajos I, a Transylvanian prince and The Turkish Pasha of Eger. In 1381, the Peace Treaty of Turin was signed here. By the 1700’s, however, the castle once again lay in ruins.

Today, Diósgyőr Castle has been beautifully restored and offers 360 degree views from its turrets. In May and August medieval themed plays, tournaments and fairs are held. July sees the castle host the Fono Folk Festival.

Consistently rated as Miskolc’s best, Végállomás Bistorant doesn’t disappoint. Combining local ingredients and modern flair, this is Miskolc’s hidden gastronomic gem. Service is prompt, professional and the food is exceptional. Think creamy tarragon pork shoulder soup, wild mushroom and sage tagliatelle, followed by sea salt caramel mousse. Prices are very reasonable and an excellent wine list seals the deal.

Hitch a ride on a narrow gauge train to lakefront dining in Lillafüred

Buy a ticket for the narrow gauge forest train behind the Végállomás Bistorant. This open carriage locomotive winds into the forest before stopping behind the striking Palace Hotel. Explore the tourist village, then head down to hanging gardens and the Lillafüred Waterfall. Also check out the Anna Cave, full of unique limestone formations and fossils. At the Palace Hotel’s front, take in views of Lake Hámori and the surrounding beech woodland. In the warmer months, rent a boat and enjoy a slow paced row around the lake.

For lunch, try the Tókert Étterem. Find a seat on their ample lakefront terrace and unwind while feasting on a creative and ever-changing menu.

Bonus Tip: Continue aboard the forest train until Garadna and enjoy freshly fried trout in a woodsy setting. Multiple trailheads can also be found nearby.

Hike to the Szeleta Cave and discover Miskolc’s heavy metal history

Get a glimpse into the region’s long history of metal works at the Museum of Metallurgy in Hámor. This intriguing collection of industrial memorabilia represents hundreds of years of local craftsmanship. A must for anyone who wants to truly get to know this city.

Next, head up into the Bükk forest under a canopy of dense beech trees. Climb a ridge until the Szeleta Cave, once home to neanderthals and one of over 1,000 caves in the national park. Drink in panoramic vistas of Lillafüred and the surrounding hills from a nearby viewpoint. Back in Hámor, grab a beer at the Szikla Presszó, and watch rock climbers ascend limestone cliffs as the sun dips behind the hills.

Lions, tigers and…..paper?

Once part of King Lajos’ royal hunting park (created in 1355), today’s zoo features over 700 animals. Originally containing only creatures found in the Bükk, the exhibits now display lions, tigers, monkeys and more. While some say the park is outdated, its open layout surrounded by forest is unique and actually quite enjoyable.

The Paper Mill Museum celebrates the attached factory’s 200 year history of paper making. This small exhibit features vintage paper making tools and Hungarian Forint bills that have been printed here. Notice the high level of security around the premises. This is due to the anti-counterfeit watermarking printing done onsite. While it may not be as exciting as the zoo, with an entry fee of only 300 Forint, it’s certainly worth a visit.

For dinner, the aforementioned Végállomás Bistorant simply can’t be beat. Their consistent level of top notch service and cuisine is unmatched on Miskolc’s west side. Choose from local wild boar ragu, roasted duck leg, or crispy fried trout from Lillafüred.

Alternatively, downtown Miskolc is home to a number of recommended eateries. Try stylish Zip’s Brewhouse for craft beer and internationally inspired fine dining.

The 2016 Miskolci Kocsonya Farsang is right around the corner. Beginning January 28th, this annual celebration centers on Hungarian winter aspic traditions, but plenty more awaits visitors discovering Miskolc for the first time.

The 4 day event features a solid line up of musical acts— including Hooligans, Bëlga, Paddy and the Rats and local favorites like Sky Fanatic. Expect plenty of hearty food sizzling on giant skillets, steaming cauldrons of mulled wine, and rustic stalls selling handmade crafts and local delicacies.

Photo: Colm Fitzgerald

Aside from these seasonal festivities, downtown Miskolc is also home to some great coffee houses, music venues, museums, restaurants and historical sites. Walking Széchenyi Utca, Miskolc’s atmospheric main street, is an experience in itself. Side lanes lead to ambient plazas such as Hősök Ter, Erzsébet Ter and the Szinva Terasz. Snack on kurtoskalacs (chimney cake) and sip your mulled wine while discovering Miskolc's unique history and culture.

In no particular order, here are 6 things to see and do in downtown Miskolc this winter.

1. Coffee at Café Frei

Café Frei is always busy, and for good reason—they are serious about their coffee here. Going to a coffee house and not having your java how you like it can ruin the whole experience. At Café Frei you have 60 plus choices made from dozens of different coffee beans.

A South American gaucho inspired interior sets the mood, while waitresses whiz past delivering caffeinated creations to eager guests. Baristas are in constant motion behind an arsenal of impressive (and beautiful) coffee machines. Creamy and strong, their Caffe Latte Italiano hits the spot. The buzz here is undeniable, no pun intended.

2. Herman Ottó Museums

Named for 19th century local ‘Renaissance Man’ Herman Ottó, these two museums are well worth a visit. Below the Avas Hill, across from Erzsébet Ter, sits the Herman Ottó Exhibition Building. One of the oldest structures in Miskolc (built 1500’s), this wood accented hall currently showcases Zoltán Dömötör’s private art collection and a permanent exhibition on the history of photography.

A short walk from downtown leads to the more impressive Herman Ottó Museum of Fine Art. Built in 1952, over 200 years of Hungarian paintings are presented here. Collections include work from Károly Lotz, Pál Szinyei Merse, Mihály Munkácsy, Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka and József Rippl-Rónai .

3. Views From Avas TV Tower

Emblematic of Miskolc, this Star Wars-esque structure built in 1963 can be seen from miles around. And panoramic views of Miskolc don’t get any better than from atop this classic lookout point. Climb stone stairs past the Avas Calvinist Church and rows of wine cellars to reach this iconic spot. On a clear day you can see across to the Zemplén Mountains from the 72 m tall tower. Bring your scarf and gloves. Trust me, it’s cold up there.

4. Exploring Miskolc’s Houses of Worship

Some of Miskolc’s most storied sights are of course its churches. The 16 meter tall iconostasis in the Greek Orthodox Church is stunning. Go and see it. The neighboring Hungarian Orthodox Museum is also of note. Overlooking Hősök Ter, the baroque Minorite Church is beautiful and grand. Across Petofi Square, the Deszka Templom or Wooden Plank Church is certainly unique in Miskolc. Built in Transylvanian style, the structure features beautifully carved flourishes and a distinctly rural appearance.

The Protestant Kakas Templom (Rooster Church) houses the largest bell in Miskolc, the Eszter Bell which weighs 3000 kilos. Below the Avas TV Tower lies the gothic-styled Calvinist Avas Church, the oldest structure in Miskolc.

Other churches in Miskolc include the Mindszent Roman Catholic Church, the Jewish Synagogue (currently closed) the Downtown Greek Catholic Cathedral and the Downtown Evangelic Church.

Most churches are open for tours by appointment only. For addresses and contact information click here.

5. Creppy PalacsintaHáz

Located in the heart of Miskolc’s Kis Avas wine cellar district, Creppy is all about crepes. This former winehouse and cellar serves up a staggering selection of stuffed crepes; savory, sweet, deep fried—they do it all. Portions are enormous here, so you’re guaranteed to leave satisfied. For something a bit on the lighter side, try the Zeus, basically a gourmet gyros inside a crepe.

6. Hello Miskolc Shop & the Magyar Termékek Boltja

The Hello Miskolc Shop also doubles as a café and tourist information center. For visitors this place is a must. Find answers to your questions about Miskolc while picking up maps of the city and nearby Bükk National Park. Besides having a friendly staff, the Miskolc Shop features local handmade jewelry, handbags, preserves, wine and more. Don’t forget to try the official Miskolc Coffee at the small café behind the shop.

Up the street, near Erzsébet Ter you’ll find the Magyar Termékek Boltja. This little shop sells all sorts of Hungarian made products. From cookware and pálinka, to chocolates and organic foods, you’re sure to find that perfect Hungarian souvenir. I highly recommend the Stuhmer chocolates.

If you buy Miskolc Pass Tourist Card, you can enjoy 15 attractions, services and the public transport free of charge. But what are the TOP attractions in this summer?

1. Cave bath of Miskolctapolca

You should also take a dip in the “healing water” of friars! The karst water cave system that is peculiar in Europe has been known as a favourite bath of Benedictine monks as early as in the 14th century. Due to the cave climate similar to tropical and humid weather and to the refreshing karst water of 30-35 °C rich in minerals, Miskolctapolca is one of the most favoured holiday resorts in Hungary. The Cave Bath**** is the internationally famous spectacle of Miskolc, its outdoor swimming pools and internal chambers are extraordinary sights and remarkable recreation locations at the same time.

2. Diósgyőr Castle

The Castle of Diósgyőr was mentioned the first time by Anonymus in about 1200. He named the settlement as Győr. King Béla IV. started to build the castle. In 1316 the castle was mentioned as Wywar (Newcastle) and after 1330 it was reconstructed. Since 1340 it was the kings' castle, but mainly the property of the queens That' s we also refer to as the "Castle of Queens".

3. Forest train

Originally, the Lillafüredi State Forest Railway (hence: LÁEV, from the abbreviation of its Hungarian name) was designed for the carriage of freight, in 1920. It mainly carried the wood lumbered in the forests of the Bükk Mountains. However, soon there was a need for passenger transport, and this was realized in the third year of the operation of the narrow-gauge railway. LÁEV carried both passengers and freight for 70 years. Finally, in 1990 the carriage of freight ceased. Since then, the narrow-gauge railway serves solely touristic functions.
